no trouble brewing: katie carguilo and the battle of the baristas

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on April 21, 2012

Katie Carguilo aims to please.

“My favorite drink to make is whatever is going to make the person who’s going to drink it the happiest,” she told The Daily. “If somebody really likes strong coffee, I’ll make them a French press. I’m in the business of making people happy. I’m not trying to force what I like onto them.”

The 28-year-old barista’s easygoing answer may not surprise the casual observer — after all, serving coffee isn’t usually viewed as a demanding or controversial profession — but Carguilo has an array of awards under her belt that certify her as a Grade A coffee snob, most recently capturing the title of Northeastern Regional Champion in the country’s most prestigious barista competition. At the end of April, she will head to Portland, Ore., to compete for the national title.

video game killer: gamers call norway killer’s bluff

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on April 20, 2012

For years, people have been trying to link video games and violence. Yesterday, Norway’s Muslim-hating mass murderer made the connection.

Anders Behring Breivik, on trial for last summer’s bombings in Oslo and shooting massacre on an island summer camp that killed 77 people, testified that he used an edition of the first-person shooting game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to train for his heinous crime.

During the fourth day of his trial, Breivik also boasted of spending 16 hours a day playing World of Warcraft online for months at a time.

Breivik said a holographic aiming device used in Modern Warfare helped him develop skills with a real gun. “You develop target acquisition,” he said.

ganja granny: 73-year-old grandmother busted for multi-state pot ring

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on April 13, 2012

A 73-year-old Oklahoma grandmother has been busted on charges that she ran a lucrative drug operation that supplied marijuana to drug dealers in four states.

Police said they found about 4 pounds of pot, a semiautomatic pistol and a revolver, and more than $276,000 in cash when they raided Darlene Mayes’ home in rural Craig County.

Investigators say the elderly woman supplied about 40 percent of the pot circulating in the area, including the city of Tulsa and parts of nearby Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri.

“That was quite a surprise,” Bobby Floyd, police chief for the city of Vinita, told The Daily yesterday.

girl talk with lena dunham

Posted in journalism, the awl by kase on April 6, 2012

It may feel like “Girls” has been on the air for months already, but the series actually doesn’t premiere on HBO until April 15th. Its creator, writer and star is Lena Dunham, about whom, if you’re reading this, you probably already have an opinion—although it’s difficult to come up with an opinion or observation about Dunham that she has not already anticipated, heard or joked about herself. Her 2010 feature, Tiny Furniture, released when she was 23, was just added to the Criterion Collection. Now there’s “Girls,” a comedy about four 20-something women puzzling out adulthood in the city, executive produced by Judd Apatow. Dunham and I met recently in New York to discuss the show, although we ended up talking about a lot of other things as well, from Hoda and Kathie Lee, to entitlement and jealousy and hate-reading, to which is more awkward to do on screen: have sex or be weighed?

Kase Wickman: So just to get my token Britney Spears reference out of the way: are you a girl, not yet a woman? Are you a girl, a woman or a lady?

Lena Dunham: I think I’m a girl, not yet a woman. I think I’m somewhere in the in-between. Yeah, I’m not a girl, not yet a woman. That’s my favorite song. Was that from her Crossroads phase?

fans get the ‘hunger’: first installment of trilogy rakes in ticket sales

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on March 24, 2012

NEW YORK — “The Hunger Games” depicts a dismal vision of the future, but the present is looking mighty rosy for the movie itself.

The movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ immensely popular young adult novel blazed into theaters at midnight yesterday, netting $19.7 million in ticket sales on 2,565 screens nationwide. It was the seventh-highest all-time gross for a midnight premiere and the highest gross for the midnight release of a non-sequel film.

Lines for a midnight showing at a theater near New York City’s Union Square stretched three blocks, packed with women wearing the signature side-braid sported by heroine Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence in the film.

The next tidal wave of fans rushed theaters at around 3 p.m. yesterday, as soon as school let out.

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on March 17, 2012

NEW YORK — A circus atmosphere of enthusiasts and opportunists prevailed at Apple stores nationwide early yesterday morning as the electronics giant launched the latest iteration of the iPad.

Some were in line simply for the joy of being one of the first to own the new device, like Christopher DiBella, ninth in line at the Apple flagship store on New York City’s Fifth Avenue. He was in town from Denver on business and couldn’t wait until he was home to have the gadget.

“I upgrade every time,” he said. “I love it, and I love these launches.”

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on March 3, 2012

High school sweethearts aren’t usually at the center of a scandal, but when the couple in question is an 18-year-old senior and her 41-year-old computer business teacher, things get very complicated.

Jordan Powers, who turned 18 last September, moved out of her mother’s house in Modesto, Calif., last week and into an apartment with James Hooker, who left his wife and three children and resigned from his teaching position. Jordan dropped out of school.

the awful tooth: is the tooth fairy going broke?

Posted in journalism, the daily by kase on February 23, 2012

The economic slump has been hard on everyone — even the Tooth Fairy.

An annual poll conducted by the nonprofit Delta Dental Plans Association showed that on average, kids are finding $2.10 under their pillows the morning after leaving a lost tooth there. That number is down 42 cents from the $2.52 they received per tooth in 2010.

Posted in business, journalism, the daily by kase on February 16, 2012

As Yahoo continues to struggle under new CEO Scott Thompson, an activist shareholder’s nomination of media heavyweights for the company’s board of directors has sent a shock wave through the Internet giant that may foretell a coming battle for control. The result could very well be a return for former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker to a top corporate position.
